The Ventura offices of Robert M. Helfend, attorney at law, are proud to announce that they have begun accepting applications for the 2018 Robert M. Helfend Criminal Defense Scholarship.

The $500 scholarship is open to full-time college students, who are either in law school or planning on pursuing a career in criminal defense. The scholarship is open to students throughout the United States. The winner will be judged on the strength of a 600-word essay, written about one of four topics:

  1. Discuss the role of confidentiality in legal practice.
  2. Discuss a case study in either criminal law or business law.
  3. Discuss the procedures regarding the disclosure of evidence in criminal cases.
  4. Discuss challenges in representing low-income or minority communities.

Applications will be accepted through April 30, 2018 and the winner will be announced the following month. Students are asked to direct questions and submit their applications to [email protected]

Robert M. Helfend has served the Ventura area as a criminal defense attorney for 33 years. He attended the University of California-Berkeley as an undergraduate and he completed his law degree at the Pepperdine University School of Law. He has practiced as a criminal defense attorney exclusively since 1984, representing a range of clients in more than 65 jury trials throughout Southern California.

He values the selflessness, hard work and dedication it requires to pursue a career in criminal defense, and would like to reward a student who shows those virtues.
